SME Build Growth Capacity & Management Capability

The MD of a small tech company with big growth plans had concerns about how they could grow the operational capability to support the increased number of clients that would naturally result from increased sales targets. Working with the leadership team, we evaluated their current strengths, explored the impacts of growth on the business, and identified limiting factors.

The Challenge

While they determined their processes were relatively robust, they identified a culture of ignoring the processes, as and when it suited. They also identified that while they had a management layer, consisting of front-line team leads and functional managers, there was no consistency in execution of these roles, which was causing all sorts of performance issues for the business. They knew that bringing in additional work would compound these operational delivery issues, potentially causing massive reputational damage with clients. 

The Solution

We designed a company-wide Role Dimensions framework, that captured the graduated differences between roles within a job family. This allowed us to clearly articulate the knowledge, skills, outputs, and expectations of each role and provided a means to have robust performance and development conversations. Once the framework was built, we built out a new performance management process. This provided everyone clarity on what was expected of their roles and allowed the leadership team to have real developmental conversations.

The Result

Using this framework, they were able to proactively develop both team leads and managers. This shift allowed them to substantially grow their business.
